Anunnakis, Nibiru or Planet X: fiction or reality?

Updated: May 1

Recently, the word Anunnaki has circulated widely across social media and online discussions. Although there are many theories about its meaning, one commonly cited interpretation is “those of royal blood” or “princely offspring.” The term comes from ancient Mesopotamian mythology, where the Anunnaki were described as powerful divine beings associated with the gods of Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, and Assyria.

According to popular modern theories, especially those promoted in alternative history circles, there was once another planet in our solar system called Nibiru. This planet is said to follow a long elliptical orbit and supposedly takes around 3,600 years to complete one revolution around the Sun. Supporters of this idea claim that the ancient Sumerians possessed advanced astronomical knowledge and knew of the existence of this hidden world. From this planet, they say, came the Anunnaki, beings who influenced early human civilization.

Some speculative interpretations suggest that the Anunnaki were responsible for accelerating human development through genetic manipulation. According to these claims, they transformed primitive humans into a more advanced species and contributed to the rise of civilization. In this narrative, they are also credited with helping create remarkable ancient structures such as the Egyptian pyramids and other megalithic wonders.

The Sumerians are often admired for their achievements in mathematics, astronomy, writing, and governance. They were among the first known civilizations to record planetary movements, celestial patterns, and systems of astrology. This has led many people to wonder how such an ancient culture developed knowledge that appears sophisticated for its time.

One of the most influential figures behind the modern Anunnaki theory was Zecharia Sitchin, a writer who interpreted ancient cuneiform tablets in ways rejected by mainstream scholars. Sitchin argued that the Sumerian texts described extraterrestrial visitors called the Anunnaki who came to Earth hundreds of thousands of years ago. According to his theory, they created humans as a hybrid species to work as laborers, particularly to mine gold needed to restore the atmosphere of their own planet.

He also described Nibiru as a large reddish world, sometimes compared in size to Jupiter. In his version of history, the Anunnaki not only changed human biology but also introduced advanced technology, agriculture, and organized society.

For decades, astronomers have discussed the possibility of undiscovered objects beyond Pluto, sometimes referred to as “Planet X.” However, this scientific search is different from the mythological Nibiru narrative. Modern astronomy has investigated the possibility of distant planets due to unusual orbital patterns in objects found in the Kuiper Belt, but no confirmed planet matching Sitchin’s description has been discovered.

Mainstream archaeologists, historians, and linguists reject Sitchin’s translations and conclusions. They argue that his readings of Sumerian texts are inaccurate and that the Anunnaki in original mythology were deities within a religious framework, not extraterrestrials. Likewise, no accepted scientific evidence supports the claim that humanity was genetically engineered by visitors from another planet.

Even so, fascination with the Anunnaki continues because the story touches deep human questions: Where did we come from? Are we alone? Did ancient civilizations know more than we realize? These ideas blend mythology, mystery, astronomy, and imagination in a way that captures public attention.

In the end, the Anunnaki remain part history, part mythology, and part modern speculation. They are significant as figures in ancient Mesopotamian belief systems, while the extraterrestrial interpretation belongs more to contemporary alternative theories than established scholarship. Whether viewed as gods, symbols, or legends, they continue to inspire curiosity about the origins of civilization and humanity itself.
